Many illustrations are available on Wikimedia Commons. Illustrations from historical books can be searched at the category Botany books. To use them in Pl@ntUse, simply paste the file name in the target page. If it works, this means that the file has already been uploaded on Openmedia. If it doesn't work, you will have to download it from Commons and upload it to Openmedia.

The list below gives the categories with the greatest number of images. Unfortunately, it seems that nobody has attempted to categorize images by their scientific name. So it may be better to search in botanical pages of Wikipedia in various languages, as authors may have chosen different images.

More images are to be found in other categories, but their classification is quite confusing. Here are some of them:

• 119 images from the first 3 volumes of Britton & Rose, The Cactaceae (1919-1923).
• 187 black and white images from Britton & Brown, Illustrated Flora of the Northern States and Canada (1913).
• 13 images from Matthioli (various sources)
• some images from the Vienna Dioscorides.
• 200 images from Masclef, Atlas des plantes de France (1891).
• 50 images from Martius, Flora Brasiliensis (1840-1906).
• 1480 images from Blanco, Flora de Filipinas (1880-1883)
• 230 images and text from the Voynich manuscript, which is a mysterious, undeciphered illustrated book (15th or 16th century).
• more than thousand images in 147 volumes of Curtis, The Botanical Magazine
• 153 images from Siebold & Zuccarini, Flora Japonica (1870).
• 115 images from Joseph Paxton, Flower Garden (1850).

A particular collaboration with the Dutch Tropenmuseum has resulted in several hundreds of images on Mediawiki Commons (few about plants up to now) : introduction, images and a blog.
