Le nom communément utilisé est Malus domestica, mais on trouve aussi Malus pumila, qui a la priorité dans le genre Malus si l'on considère que le pommier-paradis est inclus dans la même espèce que les pommiers cultivés. Une proposition de conservation a été faite :
