Very occasionally cultivated for the edible sweet arils and for the leaves which are cooked as vegetable. All plant parts contain alkaloids (timbonine) and saponins. They are used as fish poison etc., and for medicinal applications. Stems and twigs are employed for cordage, especially their fibres for ropes.
