Vernacular names

  • Philippines: aranga (general), arangan-babae (Bikol), malakamanga (Tagalog).

Distribution

The Philippines (Luzon, Samar).

Uses

The wood is used as malas for general construction.

Observations

A medium-sized tree; leaves ovate or mostly elliptical-oblong, 15-20 cm × 5-8 cm, rather coarsely crenate, obtuse, shining and glabrous on both surfaces; panicles thyrsoid, grey- or yellowish-tomentose; flowers solitary or rarely in pairs, 5-merous, grey-hirtellous, on a 1 mm long pedicel, stamens in fascicles of 3. H. bracteatum is not uncommon in primary forest at low altitude.
