- herbe aquatique vivace, à souche tubéreuse, à hampes longues, faibles, cylindriques, redressées au sommet
- feuilles flottantes, grandes, oblongues, plurinervées, glabres et lisses en dessus, rudes en dessous, à long pétiole engainant
- fleurs purpurines, hermaphrodites ou polygames, odorantes, sessiles, distiques, serrées en épis terminaux bifurqués
- périanthe remplacé par des bractées colorées et persistantes
- 6-18 étamines hypogynes libres, anthère à 2 loges
- 1 style, à stigmate oblique
- ovaire libre
- fruit formé de 2-6 carpelles soudés à la base, s'ouvrant en dedans, contenant chacun 1 à 4 graines. (Coste).

Usages
Aponogeton distachyum Thunb. CAPE ASPARAGUS. CAPE POND-WEED. South Africa. This plant has become naturalized in a stream near Montpelier, France. Its flowering spikes, known as water untjie, are in South Africa in high repute as a pickle [1] and also afford a spinach [2]. In Kaffraria, the roasted roots are reckoned a great delicacy [3].
In South Africa, the plants are cultivated in large quantities in special artificial ponds, multiplied by seeds and rhizomes. Young inflorescences, sometimes also tubers, leaves, and young sprouts of cultivated (and wild) plants are used as vegetables, inflorescences also preserved or sold on the markets. The tubers of several other species are also eaten by man and livestock. Wild distribution: South Africa, naturalized in Chile, Great Britain, France, Australia (Victoria).
