Description
- plante annuelle de 50 cm à 1 mètre, dressée, glabre, à racine fibreuse
- feuilles planes, à ligule courte et tronquée
- panicule peu fournie, presque unilatérale
- épillets horizontaux ou dressés, longs seulement de 12 mm environ, à 2 fleurs non articulées, pédicellées, et aristées
- axe glabre
- glumes égalant les fleurs, ovales-lancéolées, à 7-9 nervures
- glumelle inférieure un peu poilue et scabre au sommet, obtuse-échancrée avec deux petites mucrons, munie sur le dos d'une arête tordue-genouillée une fois au moins plus longue que les glumes. (Coste)

Usages
Avena brevis Roth. Gramineae. FLY'S LEG. SHORT OAT. Europe. The Germans call this species a native plant and say that it grows wild among grain. It is cultivated in mountainous districts of Europe, as in those of Auvergne and Forez, because it ripens quickly, where the country people call it piedo de mouche, or fly's leg, because of the appearance of the dark awns [1]. In some parts of France, on account of its excellence for fodder, it is called avoine a fourrage.

Formerly cultivated in western Europe, at present grown only rarely. Occasionally found as ruderal plant or distributed as weed, also in fields of the Azores and the Canaries, Madeira and in Portugal. Utilized like common oat. Wild distribution: France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, former Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, former Yugoslavia and Soviet Union, Sweden, Italy, Spain, the Azores and Canaries, Madeira, United States.
