Histoire

Usages

Cultivated since about 1920 in Kashmir and adjacent areas of the Himalayas; also in N Vietnam; formerly wild-growing plants were collected. Costus oil, used in the manufacture of perfumes and for medicinal purposes, is obtained from the dried root. The leaves are used as a masticatory. The plant has long been used in traditional and Ayurvedic medicine and in perfumery.
Wild distribution: Pakistan and India (Kashmir).
